Iowa House panel launches probe into child welfare process
The House Government Oversight Committee plans to study how reports on child placement, abuse, and neglect are handled by DHS. The aim is to prevent future tragedies like Natalie Finn's death while not interfering with the ongoing criminal case. DHS welcomes dialogue on legislative authority, policy, and quality improvements. Senate involvement may follow with careful limits due to the Finn prosecution.

Iowa bill would tax wire transfers to fund crimes probes
The House Ways and Means Committee approved a 1 percent fee on wire transfers to fund undercover investigations of criminal activity including drugs and human trafficking. Democratic critics call it punitive and biased against the poor. The bill, House File 494, passed 15-11 along party lines and would create a new financial crime fund for the Department of Public Safety. The fee would not apply to bank transfers or PayPal. If taxes paid include a valid ID, taxpayers could claim an equivalent credit. The measure now advances to the full House.

Democratic Iowa Rep. Todd Prichard weighs run for governor
Rep. Todd Prichard of Charles City says he is exploring a 2018 gubernatorial bid citing education declines and slow wage growth under Republican policies. He argues Republicans have failed to advance Iowa's interests while facing Branstad Reynolds succession rumors and a growing rural urban gap. He notes his military and legal background and family as part of his candidacy case.
