East Iowa Recipes Bring Indian English Lessons To Cedar Rapids
In Douglas P. Marsh apartment, Mrs. Marsh and Devila Shah share cooking methods and language lessons. The Indian family, from near Bombay, blends yeast doughs and fried items, trading tastes of pecan rolls, sugar cookies, and Gulab Jambu while learning English with patience and recipes as common ground. Diane, the Shahs’ eldest, now speaks English well though writing remains challenging, and their exchanges reveal cultural adaptation and friendship across Cedar Rapids.
