The Cedar Rapids city council agreed to six modest changes in working conditions from a 30 item request list. Key change would replace Good Friday holiday with Lincoln's birthday. all other requests were rejected as improper or not needed. Wage increases are limited to 6 cents per hour and $10 monthly for most employees, retroactive to Jan 1.
President Kennedy directs an immediate end to the government practice of intercepting Communist propaganda mailed to the United States from abroad. The White House says the review by four federal departments found the program useless for intelligence and recommends discontinuance.
Special to The Gazette William Frank Griggs 28 Newton is in the Iowa county jail for questioning in the Marengo grocery store holdup. He was arrested at a roadblock on highway 6 in Tiffin by Patrolman Paul Foster. Griggs is identified by Mildred Stockton who says the gunman demanded cash, struck her with a blackjack, and fled with 60 to 70 dollars.
In Windfall Indiana AP reports seven year old Jimmy Rainey dyed his hair green for St Patrick s day but principal Harold Wright forbids his attendance until the coloring fades. The school fears it could trigger a wave of similar hair color changes.
Two New York men, Aaron Wagman and Joseph Hacken, were arrested in a fresh college basketball bribery probe linked to a Colgate U Conn game on March 1 and a Seton Hall Dayton game on February 9. Wagman faces conspiracy to bribe a basketball player charges. authorities hinted multiple players involved.
In Chicago rescuers freed 3 year old William McCoy after nearly 19 hours trapped under debris from a four story building collapse. Fourteen injured, five seriously, as firemen and wrecking engineers labored under perilous conditions to lift the 18 inch steel I beam and release him before transporting him to the University of Illinois Research Hospital for evaluation.
Des Moines Iowa attorney general Evan Hultman ruled the recent congressional redistricting bill null and void, saying the premise for the bill did not exist. House Speaker Henry C Nelson disputed the ruling, noting the bill remains a matter for the Senate to resolve.
King Saud abruptly ends U S access to Dhahran airfield on the Persian Gulf after one year. The State Department says cooperation with Saudi Arabia will continue despite the setback. The field, developed over 15 years at great cost, has long been treated as a Saudi field used by the United States under a formal agreement and Saudi jurisdiction.
The house roads committee sent out a formula to raise city town shares of the road fund from 8 to 13 percent effective Jan 1. The plan earmarks 47 percent to primary roads and 40 percent to secondary roads with 13 percent to cities and towns based on population. It replaces the current split with 42 and 50 percent to primary and secondary roads and a smaller city share. The proposal includes yearly city plans budgets and project by project reports to the highway commission and technical help on traffic engineering.
