Mount Vernon weighs county police contract amid cost questions
Mount Vernon officials debated replacing the local police with Linn County Sheriff's Department protection. Mayor Wolvers cited a $7.50 hourly figure savings of $50,000 yearly, while Sheriff Sawyer warned the real cost could be $16–$17 per hour. Townspeople worried about backup, insurance, and familiarity with residents as council members pressed for leadership and budget clarity. The council will continue the discussion.

Group urges C R school board to delay reorganization until 1987

The board scheduled a March 28 vote on switching in 1984, with a final decision April 11, while concerns over boundary changes, special education space, and portable classrooms were raised. In other business, the board approved a 1983-84 operating budget of 58.17 million, with local taxes funding 26.35 million and 2.92 million passed to the Area Education Agency, and announced staff reductions due to declining enrollment, pending a hearing for one affected employee.
