Iowa may form separate Department of Adult Corrections

Iowa could create a stand alone Department of Adult Corrections this fall, moving adult corrections from the Department of Social Services. The plan, led by Sen. Richard Drake, would establish a new agency with its own director and a five member advisory board. Governor Branstad supports the concept and urges passage as part of a broader corrections package.

Court denies rehearing in Williams case

The Eighth Circuit refused to reconsider its reversal of a murder conviction in the 1968 Christmas Eve slaying of a 10 year old Iowa girl. Williams who is also known as Anthony Erthel Williams remains in prison as the state appeals to the Supreme Court with 90 days to file.

Soviets Cut Oil Prices Undercutting OPEC Move

The Soviet Union slashed its oil price by $1.25 a barrel to $28 retroactive to March 1, targeting Western Europe’s markets and signaling a potential price war as Britain weighs its response to OPEC’s cut to $29. Nigeria and others were cited as possible followers.

House Democrats propose 1984 budget with tax hike and defense cuts

Democratic leaders unveil an 863.5 billion dollar budget for 1984 that reduces Reagan’s defense spending rise by more than half and raises about 30 billion in new tax revenue. The plan links the revenue to ending the July 1 10 percent income tax cut, though Ways and Means would decide details. Reagan opposes altering the tax cut.
