Historic Cedar Rapids sites face demolition amid flood recovery
In Cedar Rapids, demolitions at Edgewood Road and Johnson Avenue NW clear two old buildings for a Walgreens. The 1800 block of First Avenue SE will yield a new commercial building, while preservation efforts salvage materials for reuse. The Great Furniture Mart on First Street SE, built in 1915 and vacant after the 2008 flood, stands as the last large pre 1960 warehouse on that side. Mark Stoffer Hunter notes downtown landmarks like the Paramount Theatre and Iowa Theatre Building are being preserved for community use.
