The Internal Revenue Service announced higher back income taxes and penalties for industrialist Henry Garsson and the estate of his late brother Murray covering 1942 to 1946. The new assessments are 766000 to Henry and 197000 to the estate, raising total to approximately 2750000. The Garssons were convicted in 1949 of war contract frauds and bribery of former Rep. May to secure munitions contracts, and all three were imprisoned.
Tokyo reports Japan's air force will machine gun invading walrus swarms to aid fishermen. The defense agency acted after fishermen claimed $55,000 in net wreckage and lost catch last year due to the mammals.
Retired Admiral Felix Stump has been elected chairman of the board of the Asiatic Aeronautical Co., taking over the job previously held by the late Lt. Gen. Claire Chennault of Flying Tigers fame. The announcement was made Saturday.
IOWA CITY two East Iowans were charged with drunken driving today. Max Wheatley Jr of Hills was arrested about 11 am after his car ran off highway 218. Frank Stinacker 67 of near Swisher was arrested Friday night after his car ran off the road at the junction of highway 218 and the Swisher road.
City briefs note Dr C A Noe recovering well at St Luke's hospital after a recent heart attack. Other items include hospital stays, local sales, a 15 day jail sentence for James Ampey, church events, alumni reunions, theft report, and various ads.
Mrs. Lester Simmons, 57, of Marion, was admitted to St. Luke's hospital for observation after being struck by a car in a parking lot. She injured her right knee when walking in a shopping center area.
About 600 car owners completed auto license renewals on Saturday at the courthouse. By Sunday the 1959 Iowa plates must be displayed to avoid arrest, with roughly 45,500 Linn County residents already renewing. An estimated 2,500 motorists had not yet purchased new plates.
A second man charged in the November holdup of DeLane's Fifth Avenue tavern, Hugh Dosher, 37, entered an innocent plea Friday after being returned from Petersburg Virginia. Dosher and Arthur Teske, 37, face robbery with aggravation charges. Teske has pled guilty and is serving a 25 year sentence. The holdup involved two armed men escaping with 3000 dollars on November 8.
Donna Wie denman by her father Leonard files a dismissal of a $3853 damage suit brought against Security Realty Corp. The action ends without prejudice and confirms court records show the case dismissed.
MONTE CARLO AP Prince Albert of Monaco celebrated his first birthday on Saturday marking a milestone for the royal family in the principality. The event reflected the public interest in the young heir and the ongoing duties of the House of Grimaldi.
The New York Woodwind Quintet delivered two modern pieces Quintet 1957 by Walter Piston and Concerto for Wind Quintet 1958 by William Bergsma. Lillian T. Sinclair 69 wife of A G Sinclair died Friday at 2015 Bever Ave SE Cedar Rapids after 17 years in the city. Born in Monroe County in 1889 she married in Albia in 1912. Survived by husband two daughters Mrs Floyd King and Mrs Gene Stone three siblings and a brother. Member of St Paul Methodist and Malta chapter No 415 CES. Mildred D White 84 widow of Calvin O White died at her Cedar Rapids home Friday born in Kenosha Wis January 20 1875 married in Chicago January 3 1889. Survived by three daughters Mabel Glover and Theodore Burgess Cedar Rapids and Marvin Andersen Minneapolis two sons Harold and Lawrence Madison Wis. Funeral services for Charles Slechta will be held Sunday at 2 p m at Jane's with the Rev Joseph Havlik officiating. Burial will follow at Czech National Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.
Frederick Hearn divorced after his wife disturbed his sleep by talking in bed. The judge found cruelty and ruled she deprived him of peace of mind needed to sleep. She allegedly struck him and tore his hair, even pushing him from bed during weeks of nightly talking.
Cold winds from the Rockies bring heavy snow across the Great Plains. Harrison in extreme northwest Nebraska reports eight inches in drifts, with six inches at Ainsworth and Chadron making roads hazardous. Wyoming sees two to five inches. Denver records two inches.
Linn County Democrats grilled 12 state representatives at the Sheraton Montrose, probing reapportionment school reorganization and liquor by the drink. Rep. Wilson warned reapportionment may be blocked while Rep. Martin urged men of good will to push it forward, with liquor by the drink likely to vote within two weeks.
Kathleen A. Connolly, of 1815 Sixth Ave SE, pled guilty to running a stop sign and driving without a license. Judge Loren Hullinger gave her a 750 word essay assignment on why people should be qualified to operate a motor vehicle in place of fines totaling 12 dollars and costs.
The Rev. George V. Neal pastor of Independent Bible Church in Columbus Junction resigns effective June 15 after four years. He will enter mission work at Little Kentucky in Neal, Kentucky in the Appalachian region.

Iowa Printing Board votes three to two along party lines appointing Leon Barnes of Northwood as editor of the Iowa Official Register. A subcommittee had recommended Wallis Bishop for the post. Bishop previously led WOI and WOI TV at Iowa State College. The Red Book compiles state government facts and figures and is published biannually.
