Harry B. Swan 47 of Atlantic Iowa Republican state chairman died after his car skidded on ice near Stuart on U S highway 6. Paul Hilton of Malvern and Swan’s employee were injured as another car carrying Boyd Cambridge was badly hurt. Swan had led Iowa Republicans to a smashing victory last year and was a potential candidate for national party chairmanship. He was a World War I veteran and longtime attorney in Atlantic.
R P Andreas 49 president of Honeymead Products and his wife were injured when their car hit the rear of a semi truck on highway 30 five miles east of Cedar Rapids. Mrs Andreas had a fractured leg and bruises while he suffered chest injuries and lacerations. The truck driver was Harold Butte 31 of Haxtun Colo with relief driver John Larson 40 also of Haxtun. Both trucks were en route to Cedar Rapids and cause of the crash was not determined.
The Gazette offers a $10 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those stealing copies of The Cedar Rapids Gazette from subscribers boxes. Numerous complaints report thefts, especially of Friday and Sunday issues.

The blaze started in a laundry room where janitor Peter Ales slept and used a gas plate. gas system and wiring appear nonfaulty.
An unnamed government official said the Army and the Reconstruction Finance Corp are negotiating to take over 300 to 350 million dollars of British war contracts and U S factories. The move would cut British obligations by 20 to 25 percent while the U S under lease lending would supply new weapons. The RFC would buy British owned munitions plants in the U S through the Defense Plant Corp. The British aid program could boost national defense plant expansion by about 50 percent. The U S also plans to transfer 99 naval ships to Britain this year under the lend lease program including mosquito torpedo boats and older destroyers and submarines. Ships will be replaced promptly as new vessels are built. Roosevelt has not yet signed the official order.
Greek dispatches report Premier Mussolini personally led a major Albanian front counter attack but Italian forces were driven back in heavy fighting. Greece claims gains northwest of Tepeleni and numerous Italian casualties, with prisoners including blackshirt officers who say Mussolini visited Albania to bolster morale.
City firemen request an eight hour shift and six day week, replacing the current 24 on 24 off 84 hour cycle. Chief Kohout presented the petition with no endorsement. Council rebutted with figures showing costs, pension payouts, and staffing implications.

President Franklin D Roosevelt Jr has been ordered to active duty aboard the destroyer Mayrant on April 3. Ensign Roosevelt is in the naval reserve and serves alongside his two brothers James and Elliott who are also in the armed services.
The appropriations committee presented a 3 446 585 144 navy bill to carry the two ocean navy construction plan and warned the war situation may worsen. It calls for 729 ships under construction or contracted and raises enlisted strength to about 245 000. Major items include 1 515 000 000 for shipbuilding and 434 550 000 for naval aircraft.

The Iowa House voted 92 to 7 to require a blood test for syphilis within 20 days before marriage licenses. The bill, already passed by the Senate, sets a $5 cap on doctor fees for the examination and mirrors similar laws in Wisconsin and Illinois.
London based author and playwright F Britten Austin, aged 55, whose work appeared extensively in the Saturday Evening Post in the United States, died on Wednesday.
Major Walter A. Meyer, longtime Cedar Rapids resident and veteran, died at 210 a m Thursday at 2715 Dalewood Ave SE after illness since December 1. Born August 19, 1884, he served in the infantry reserve and National Guard since the Spanish American War era, distinguished as a marksman, and was part of the 1919 France international team. He worked 27 years as a clerk in charge of records for the Railway Mail Service.
