Winter delivered a double blast of record lows in Cedar Rapids with 5 below zero on Saturday morning, surpassing a 1948 date low of minus 1. Friday’s minus 2 was eclipsed by a 3 below reading. Temperatures will rise toward 20 degrees with a low near 10 as the date’s historic low stands at minus 12 in 1948.
New York reporters note the Girl Scouts reach 50 years of selling cookies with two billion boxes sold. Last year they moved 130 million and aim for 200 million this drive ending with National Girl Scout Sunday. Frances Hesselbein calls it a girl’s first business exposure.
In Casper Wyo Hart captured 61 percent to Mondale’s 36 percent securing 7 or 8 of 12 national convention delegates. Hart carried most counties with 2 120 votes to Mondale 1 267 and 104 uncommitted. Others included Jesse Jackson George McGovern and John Glenn with small counts. Mondale’s team called it a moral victory. Hart said the win shows broad Western support. Local and national reactions cited endorsements and campaign dynamics as shaping the result.
Police reported a string of blasts in London with 23 injured at a nightclub and damage to an Arab newspaper store. Scotland Yard blamed Libyans for the attack wave and warned Libyans and the Muslim community to expect further countermeasures. A Libyan embassy spokesman denied involvement as authorities detonated three other time bombs and searched for suspects.
A 33 year old Milton Johnson of Joliet Township has been charged with rape and will be charged with murder in a July attack and is identified as prime suspect in four Joliet area slayings from August. Will County DA Ed Petka said evidence links Johnson to the killings and a related ambush, with further details given at a news conference.
