An unidentified war plane dropped five bombs on the French steamer Djebel-Natar between Minorca and Sardinia. The ship was damaged but no injuries were reported. The French destroyer Foche raced from Marseilles to assist, and the ship’s captain said the attack occurred as they sailed northward.
An armed trawler tried to sink the Spanish loyalist tanker Coride de Zubiera eight miles off Ushant island north of Brest. French naval seaplanes pursued the attacker after being alerted by the maritime prefect. The trawler fled as a coast guard cutter headed out to sea.
ARCACHON France AP reports the munitions transport Mar Cantabrico was saved from destruction and convoyed as a prize of war to an insurgent Spanish port to salvage its $2,700,000 US made ammunition cargo. The ship, previously sunk in the Bay of Biscay while attempting to slip past the insurgent blockade, reportedly left the scene under its own power with a shell fire in the hold under control. A boarding party from the insurgent cruiser Canarias seized the freighter and cargo after shelling.
Nebraska State Deputy Sheriff E. E. Clark announced the arrest of George Shorty Hart, 33, here after Iowa authorities named him a fugitive from Kossuth county jail Algona. Hart, who escaped Oct 10 1936 after being seized as a suspect in a butter theft gang, carried 6500 dollars and refused to talk.
