Senate votes split on school aid amendments in Iowa

Democratic senators Gau dineer and Shirley proposed boosts to equalization aid for 1969 70 and 1970 71 raising totals from 227 million to 250 million in a party line division. Amendments failed 41 to 17 and 42 to 17 with one Republican joining Democrats. The bill also allocates 3.5 million annually for special education and 181 thousand for matching federal defense education funds. State aid would drop from 35.08 percent to about 33.6 percent if costs rise 6 percent. Democrats accuse Republicans of endorsing a local tax increase without budget reports from Ways and Means.
