The House approved anti busing provisions in Senate passed bills and signaled it would not yield on the strongest anti busing language to date. It also voted to request a conference with the Senate to reconcile differences in separate higher education measures.
Washington lawmakers split along party lines as the house debated tougher anti busing provisions. Representatives Culver Smith and Mayne voted no while Gross Kyl Scherle and Schwengel supported the measure.
Lawmakers vote 272 to 139 to require the conference committee to retain the House language on desegregation busing. Opposition, 139, argued conferees would cave. Earlier amendments would delay court ordered desegregation and curb federal funding for forced busing.
Four unarmed men stole an estimated 456000 in cash from an armored truck outside a Kodak plant in Rochester New York. Police said two suspects blocked the truck, grabbed eight money bags, and fled in a green car. The truck was owned by Doyle Armored Service, Inc.
Washington columnist Jack Anderson testified before Senate investigators that Richard Kleindienst is unfit to be attorney general, citing his role in ITT antitrust settlements and alleged attempts to conceal truth. Anderson claimed a memo by ITT lobbyist Beard links the deal to a $400,000 pledge to the Republican convention and questioned Kleindienst's negotiating stance versus his public statements.

In Des Moines the Iowa House narrowly approved a conference report lowering the adult rights age to 19 from 21. The bill, 70 to 25, advances but a motion to reconsider failed, delaying sending it to the governor. The dispute traces to earlier 18 within the Senate and party maneuvering surrounding Gov. Ray and Lt. Gov. Jepsen.
