Official Thursday receipts show 1,000 cattle 7,000 hogs and 1,000 sheep in Chicago. Hogs steady to strong. cattle and calves mixed with prime and high quality loads listed. Des Moines and other areas report snow delays and higher bids across weight categories.
Sioux City cattle receipts totaled 3,500 with calves none. Steers active and largely steady to 25 cents higher with some 50 cent gains. Heifers steady to 25 cents higher. Choice steers under 1,250 pounds ranged from 27.00 to 28.00 with top end at 29.00. Choice heifers around 26.00 to 27.00, good and low choice 22.50 to 26.00.
Prices on the Cedar Rapids hog market were a quarter higher Wednesday with butchers 200-220 lbs at 15.10 to 15.70 delivered at the plant and packers 330 lbs and down at 13.60 to 14.00. Veal calves market paused as Wilson is out. Also listed are ranges for prime steers and heifers, utility and standard cattle, wool lambs, ewes, and poultry and egg prices along with grain and soybeans values.
Stocks rose notably in active trading on Wednesday with gains in key issues ranging from fractional to about two points. Traders saw advances in several sectors, including specialties, as volume reached roughly 3.5 million shares. Dow components showed mixed but generally positive movement led by industrials and rails.
Craig Seas Inc and LeFebvre Corp of Cedar Rapids report six months ending January 31 net earnings of 285000 on 7110000 sales, 37 cents per share. Prior year six months net 232000 on 5347000 sales, 31 cents per share. President Randers at Lawrence Mass notes continued earnings rise, with this year’s forecast 50 percent higher. Operations boosted by commercial and military product demand and diversification into fiberglass boats and diesel outboard motors.
Chicago AP reports 900000 bushels sold to Japan and Formosa boosting soybeans after the trade. Moderate short covering lifted corn oats on heavy snow news. Wheat fell 14-4, corn up to 7, oats up 44-74, rye up 5-1, soybeans up 14-1 percent.
Chicago cash provisions show no wheat or soy bean sales. Corn prices listed for No 2 yellow at 1.16 and No 3 yellow at 1.13 with various lots. oats at 78 cents for No 1 heavy white and No 1 extra heavy white. barley making choice price between 1.15 and 1.25 with feed at 93 cents to 1.10. Soybean oil quoted at 73.
Omaha reports 5 500 cattle on sale with calves at 125. Choice slaughter steers were steady to 25 cents higher with many lower grades unsold. Good to high choice steers bring 23 254 to 28.00 while most choice runs 26 254 to 27 75. High choice heifers reach 28.00 with good to choice at 23 00 to 27 25 and most choice around 26 50 to 27 25.
AP wire report from Chicago notes steady butter receipts 779000 and wholesale prices unchanged. Eggs show firm with 23400 receipts and mixed and standard grade prices listed. Live poultry receipts 51000 lbs with White Rock fryers under 4 lbs at 23 to 27 cents. Potatoes arrivals and on track totals given with Idaho Russets at 5.80 and Idaho bakers at 6.25 to 6.40 per cwt.
NY AP USDA report shows butter demand fair with receipts 659000 and steady prices. Eggs show short supply with heavy demand. receipts 29600 and extras 34.5 to 36.5 cents per pound. Standards large and checks around 28.5 to 33.2 cents.
