Mrs. Felix Barta of Cedar Rapids receives notice that her husband will be honored posthumously with the Medal of Merit for Valor. Gene J. Digman of the National Police Officers Association informs the engraving of his name at the Police Hall of Fame in Port Charlotte Florida. A Cedar Rapids ceremony to present the medal to Mrs. Barta will be scheduled later. Barta was killed in the line of duty in Cedar Rapids on February 15.

A northwest Iowa family spent Tuesday night in a car trapped in a snowdrift on a county road 7 miles east of Fostoria. The father, Paul Flaherty Jr., walked nearly two miles to call for help as his wife and two children huddled inside. It took two snowplows five hours to reach them, and a local farmer could not move his tractor to assist.
Ventur a high school girls basketball fans totaling about 60 to 70 were stranded overnight in Belmond after returning from Des Moines. Two Ventura buses sheltered at the VFW hall while 15 more carloads gathered at a truck stop and restaurant. A Jefferson Lines bus with 14 passengers also spent the night, and another Ventura bus left Belmond at 2 p.m., taking five hours to cover 30 miles to Clear Lake. Army corps of engineers said the Coralville reservoir outflow could be stepped up to 7000 cubic feet per second due to rising upstream Iowa River flows. Outflow was increased from 4800 to 6000 cfs at 5 p.m. Tuesday as the reservoir gained a foot in the last 24 hours. Engineers aim to hold Iowa River flow through Iowa City to 10000 cfs.
City street department crews started plowing at 3:30 a.m. as snow fell heavily. Main arteries were cleared by daylight though ice hindered progress. Traffic delays occurred on Oakland Road and First Avenue E. flashing yellow lights aided routing. Equipment included 6 graders, 32 dump trucks, and 4 spreaders with sanding to follow. Plowing will continue until snow is cleared and downtown parking banned after nightfall.

William H. Beaty a 37 year old Springville man was arraigned Tuesday afternoon before Judge Sandee Jordan and given until next Tuesday to plead to a false check charge. He allegedly passed a $65 bogus check to Fred Van Dyke Co. for a used car on Feb 15 and wrote four other false checks totaling $291.74. He was arraigned previously on an embezzlement by lagent charge involving $3,507.50 in merchandise. Bond set at $1,000.
Alan Mease of Palo was named justice of the peace for Fayette township by the Linn county board of supervisors on Tuesday. He succeeds prior JP and will serve the township under Linn oversight.

Joseph Robert Dudek of Cedar Rapids a long time resident and retired building contractor died in a local hospital at 1 15 p m Tuesday after a brief illness. Born July 14 1888 he married Opal Dvorak November 25 1949. He was a World War I veteran and a member of St John s Episcopal church and the Carpenters union. Surviving besides his wife are two sisters Mrs Joseph Bishop and Mrs Frank Naibert both of Cedar Rapids. Services will be at Turner chapel at 10 30 a m Friday with The Rev Thomas S Hulme rector of Grace Episcopal Church. Burial Cedar Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.

An 11th hour Republican caucus in the Iowa House backed the Graham-Lange amendment to a committee approved redistricting bill by 69 to 37. The measure, sponsored by Rep. Dewey E. Goode, aims to keep Sac and Ida counties in Hoeven's district as it would shift to the sixth district. Hoeven opposed any transfer of the 12 counties in his current district.

City Plan ning Commission adopts the Major Streets Plan after a public hearing. The panel recommended favorable action to the city council while denying rezoning requests from Barnhizer Co. and Woodford Co. and approving several R-1 to R-2 changes for parcels on NW and SE sides. Plats approved include Bel Air Estates Ninth, Edieman's Second, Northwood Knolls Seventh, Park View Fourth, Rapoport's First, and Straka's First additions.
A National Airlines plane carrying Mrs John Kennedy returned to Miami after an oil pressure warning light flashed in the cockpit during the West Palm Beach to Washington flight. The flight switched course and landed safely in Miami.
Investigators combed a hayfield for a missing boy but found no clues. Police reported no trace of the child despite extensive search efforts.
