Des Moines AP State Insurance Commissioner E W Clark was cleared Wednesday by the Senate insurance committee of misconduct in approving the merger of Modern Brotherhood of America Mason City IA and Independent Order of Foresters Toronto Canada. The committee returned the house resolution without recommendation for investigation. Senator Irving H Knudson signed the report.
The committee stated funds allegedly paid by a Chicago brokerage to officers of the Modern Brotherhood were from Foresters funds. NRA securities remain on deposit in the Iowa department. Iowa examiners uncovered the distribution of funds and reported to the Canadian commissioner. Files and correspondence are open for inspection in Iowa.
In Huntsville Texas guards thwarted an attempted escape at dawn with five inmates. Gunfire wounded three prisoners including Pete Finch and Charley Frazier, while two others surrendered. Frazier McArthur and Finch were serving robbery related sentences. Hill and Thornton escaped but were recaptured. Thornton is Bonnie Parker's husband, tied to Clyde Barrow.
