CBS postpones Sticks and Bones amid POW reception furor
CBS-TV delayed the David Rabe play Sticks and Bones after 69 affiliates refused to air it, citing distress over returning prisoners of war and veterans. Producer Joseph Papp called the move censorship, arguing for First Amendment rights and urging airing once context is less sensitive. The telecast was later rescheduled. Rabe, a Dubuque native, studied at Loras College.
