Amana Society and Iowa County clash over roads policy
The Iowa county board faced both sides over unpaved roads near Amana. Lenox township residents accused loggers of damaging roads as timber moves from Amana Society lands. Amana Society secretary Den Shoup sought paving funded by road use tax. Supervisors debated embargoes and rock spreading while noting Johnson County road embargoes and funding limits. Shoup pressed for paving a 940 foot street in a new subdivision and for continued use of state funds for Main Amana highways, arguing Amana villages generate significant road tax revenue. The panel weighed maintenance duties and long term costs, with county attorney noting paving implications for future upkeep.
