Fire Devastates Cedar Rapids Cereal Plant and Citywide Damage
The Cedar Rapids blaze at American Cereal, later Quaker Oats, drew 54 Vinton and Iowa City units, with 21 water streams and melted brick structures. Two workers died, four firemen injured, and 600 plant employees lost work before rebuilding plans were announced. The city faced water shortages and tax relief aided recovery.
