Great Cereal Plant Fire Threatened Cedar Rapids

A 1905 fire at the Quaker Oats plant in Cedar Rapids caused two deaths, $1.5 million in property loss, and temporary unemployment for about 600 people. The blaze started in the hull grinding room and spread rapidly, threatening nearby homes and businesses as fire crews from several towns battled the flames. The Fitzgerald family narrowly escaped as their Third Street NE home burned.

Cedar Rapids Quaker Oats Mill Fire Rebuilt Stronger

A massive fire destroyed the American Cereal Company plant in Cedar Rapids, with elevators and a seven story warehouse burned and debris threatening the business district. Firefighters from Cedar Rapids and out of town battled the flames for hours as streets filled with onlookers and a 26 hour shift left four injured. By March 20 a new plant was promised in Cedar Rapids with tax exemptions to keep the factory local. the rebuilt operation would be larger, employing hundreds and expanding capacity far beyond the pre fire output.
