In Davis California a living rat with a liver the size of a silver dollar is kept alive up to 30 hours by a glass and rubber apparatus dubbed the glass rat. Dr. Ralph W. Brauer headed the project, using the device to study cirrhosis and liver diseases independently of other organs. The setup includes a small pump acting as a heart and a glass lung, with the liver resting on a bed and bile being measured as it is produced. Washington Eisenhower nominates former Rep. John S. Wood to the Subversive Activities Control Board to replace the retiring Watson B. Miller. Wood, 70, formerly chaired the House American Activities Committee and is from Canton, Georgia. Also named is Clarence G. Morse to the Federal Maritime Board to serve until June 30, 1956. Morse, 51, San Francisco, current general counsel of the board.
Special to The Gazette Victor. The new St James Lutheran church in Victor will be dedicated in a 10 30 a m service on Sunday March 13. The dedicatory speaker will be Rev W D Oetting of Waterloo president of the Iowa District East of the Missouri Synod Lutheran church. A 3 p m festival service will feature Rev I G Kitzmann of Charlotte secretary of the district board of adult parish education. The church pastor is Rev C H Schroeder.
Miss Carol Griffith of Salina Kansas will become Christian education director of St Pauls United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids Iowa this summer. The appointment was announced by H H Morse chair of pastoral relations. Griffith will start in August after completing a master’s degree at Boston University School of Theology in June. She is a Baker University graduate of 1951 and has prior Christian education experience in Ottumwa Iowa and Providence Rhode Island. She also studied at Garrett Biblical Institute.
Dr. David I. Berger, former Coe College professor and chapel dean, will speak at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in First Baptist church as the second in a series of midweek Len ten services. He recently returned to the University of Dubuque seminary after a year’s leave, which included a trip to Alaska.
