DES MOINES AP reports Governor Robert Ray signed the Uniform Controlled Substances Act to stiffen penalties for drug pushers and ease penalties for drug users. The measure takes effect July 1.

Curtis 56 of 114 Oak Street Hiawatha died Thursday after a long illness Born March 2 1915 in Noble Illinois he lived in the Cedar Rapids area since 1936 He worked 21 years for Wilson Sinclair Co He was a member of St Pius X church Surviving are his wife Gertrude Book three daughters Beverly Nina Jerald Hiett of Levittown Pa and two sons Robert of Hazard Ky Richard at home a brother Robert Curtis Ludlow Ill and nine grandchildren Services will be a Memorial Mass Saturday at 10 30 a m at St Pius X Church Rev John Sims Burial in Dunkard Cemetery Friends may call Kuba Funeral Home east after 7 p m Thursday Rosary to be recited by Father Sims and the parish Friday at 8 p m in the funeral home.
Louis C Tufts 73 of 1320 C avenue NE died in West Branch on Friday. Born in Cedar Rapids June 16 1897 he was a World War I veteran who played in the Three I League and was under contract with Pittsburgh before military service interrupted his career. He leaves two brothers Oliver B Tufts Wisconsin Dells and Arthur R Tufts Waterloo and four sisters all of Cedar Rapids except Mrs Charles M Dye Pomona California. Services at Turner chapel east noon Monday with Rev E E Ross. burial Linwood Cemetery with American Legion post rites. Casket will not be opened after the service. Friends may call Turner chapel east until 11:30 a.m. Monday.

Edward L. Hunter 70 of 2333 B avenue NE died Thursday after a short illness. A retired Barron Motor Co. employee born December 9 1900 in Cedar Rapids he lived here all his life. Richard C Brown 55 of 2515 Twenty fourth Avenue SE Cedar Rapids died Friday after a brief illness. Born March 25 1915 in Mattoon Illinois he married Nellie Marie Richardson on August 1 1936 in Vinton. He was a member of the Chauffeurs Teamsters and Helpers union local 238.
