Seed Barley Demand Grows Across Eastern Iowa This Spring

Eastern Iowa farmers report stronger interest in seed barley for an early feed crop with scarce varieties and higher prices. Wisconsin 38 and Oderbruker are tighter than Trebi and Velvet, with seed prices around 1.85 to 2.00 dollars per bushel and bulk at 1.25 to 1.50. Factors include brewery demand, prior scab scarcity, a weaker last corn crop, and government planting incentives to replace corn in some farms. Iowa and U.S. barley stocks and 5-year averages show tighter supplies.
