Washington AP says Eastern Airlines presented a new contract proposal to its Machinists on Thursday. Mediation officials hoped to avert a nationwide strike by 11 p.m. CST. The union called the offer an improvement but still pressed for pay hikes and warned strike prep would continue. Pilots and flight attendants refused to cross picket lines and eyed possible sympathy action if the cooling-off period ends. AFL CIO chief Kirkland urged honoring picket lines and criticized Texas Air’s handling of Eastern. He asked Bush to delay the strike by 60 days.
