John Francis won free beer for life at the Capt. James Cook Hotel in Narrabundah near Canberra after a 1970 contest. New owners cut off his supply in 1975, but a 2 1/2 year court case awarded him 1 087 for beers missed. Arrangements were made with the new owners to reinstate his daily three 10 ounce servings.
NASA scientists say cold weather plus normal sonic booms explain mysterious offshore noise reports from South Carolina to Connecticut. They describe upward sonic waves refracted downward by a warmer air layer near the surface, causing booms to be heard 100 to 200 miles away and puzzling coastal residents.

The Linn County District Court, First Avenue Division, handed deferred sentences or probation to 22 defendants and fined Loren A. Howard 300 dollars for a February 9 drunk driving charge. One defendant, Thomas M. Newcomb, received probation then a suspended jail term after probation violations. Remaining defendants include Cynthia K. Emerson granted deferred sentencing and probation, with 20 others also placed on probation through their attorneys. Names and arrest dates listed for all.
