Willits accuses Senate of being misled over blind nominee
Sen Earl Willits says Gov Ray overstated neutral grounds for nominating Jeannette Eyerly to the Iowa Commission for the Blind. He suggests longtime director Kenneth Jernigan may have influenced the move and seeks assurances she will act independently and curb Jernigan's sway.

Road funds plea as Iowa Senate balks at bill
C W Sloan of the Iowa Good Roads Association warns the road funding bill, approved by the House, stalls in the Senate Ways and Means Committee. He says delaying action could deprive Iowa counties and cities of needed funds to fix roads and bridges amid severe winter conditions and worsening problems. The proposal would raise 55 million dollars via a three cent gas tax and a 3.5 cent diesel tax, costing the average motorist less than one fifth of a cent per mile.

Ray cool to interest rate cut in Iowa debate
Des Moines Gov. Robert Ray voiced coolness toward lowering credit interest rates though open to arguments. He warned against constraining what businesses can charge and noted consumer confusion as a reason for government limits on revolving credit. A House bill would trim rate caps from 18 and 15 percent, citing lower costs and Minnesota’s flat 12 percent as references. Ray will review information before final decision. ON THIS DATE in 1845 Florida became the 27th American state.
