Evening Tax Help By Phone Offered Cedar Rapids

The Internal Revenue Bureau launched evening telephone tax help in Cedar Rapids from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday until March 16, with daytime hours remaining 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays. The service operates from the Cedar Rapids post office building on the second floor. Nine other Iowa cities including Des Moines Sioux City Council Bluffs Fort Dodge Mason City Waterloo Ottumwa Davenport and Dubuque also offer the service until March 16.

Fire at Bronx Furniture Plant Kills Seven

NEW YORK AP Fire caused by dust explosions swept through a Bronx furniture factory killing seven workers trapped inside. About 120 were at work at Utility Airlife Manufacturing Company when the blaze broke out in a rear storeroom. Some fled screaming while others leaped air shafts to reach the street. Fire officials said the employer fought the blaze with hand extinguishers for 20 minutes before an alarm was sounded, possibly preventing more deaths.

Marie C. Keppel, 75, of 1418 Fifth Avenue SE, died at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday after a lingering illness. Born in Cedar Rapids December 2, 1877, she lived there all her life. In Karachi Canada’s first Comet jet airliner crashed and burned during take off, killing five Canadian crewmen and six British aircraft technicians aboard.
