Construction pace sets new record in January
U S construction spending reached an all time January high with a pace of 255.5 billion dollars if continued for a year. Private construction rose 7 percent to 200.2 billion with private homes up 9 percent to 90.4 billion while public construction climbed 16 percent to 47.7 billion. Officials cited lower interest rates as fueling the surge and projected continued growth through 1983 and toward 1984 despite unemployment near 10 percent.
