Patrolmen Hines and Weiland followed him from Ellis Boulevard to F Avenue and Fifth Street NW, where Burlingham allegedly drove over the curb and sidewalk, nearly struck a root beer stand, then backed and continued east. He pled not guilty before District Judge H. C. Ring, with bond set at 500 dollars. Burlingham drove a Tanker Gas Co. truck and was reported unsteady on booking.
Sheriff George Bates reports three children perished in a Sunday blaze that destroyed a farm dwelling near Temple in western Clare County Michigan. The incident occurred in a sparsely populated area.
An investigator said two ransom notes were left by abductors of 12 year old Peter Levine. The notes were typed on a cheap dial typewriter and may indicate a demand of 600 rather than 60000 dollars.

He was on a nearby track and dragged several feet before the engine was stopped. Gehm was taken to St Luke's Hospital in an ambulance in serious condition.
