Peking AP says Communist Party Chairman Hua Guofeng resigned and was replaced by Hu Yaobang, marking a shift toward Deng Xiaoping's modernization. Deng was elected party chairman of the military commission, Zhao Ziyang became vice chairman, and Hua was demoted to junior vice chair.
