CHICAGO AP reports cattle receipts at 12 major livestock markets this week declined from the prior week and the previous year. Prices for cattle and lambs fell while hogs posted modest gains, per agriculture department figures released Saturday.
Salable receipts for hogs 300 steady with top near 23.75 and bulk around 23.50 heavy 19.75 to 22.75. cattle receipts 200 steady with good and choice steers 34.00 to 38.50, calves 25.00 to 41.00, heifers 25.00 to 38.00, cows 24.00 to 30.00. stocker offerings 24.90 to 28.00. sheep 100 steady with medium and choice lambs 30.00 to 33.00, ewes 14.00 to 18.00.
Compared with Friday last week fed steers and heifers were mostly steady to 25c lower while beef cows wavered 25c lower. Vealers and stockers held steady with high choice prime steers at 37.65 for 1382 lb, other grades ranging 32.00 to 36.00 for good to prime, and cows 28.00 to 29.50 for commercial. Bulls rose to 31.00, stockers at 36.50, and light feeders 31.00 to 34.50 with dealers at 38.00 for choice.
Slaughter steers hold steady to down 25 cents while heifers and mixed yearlings stay firm to strong. Cows and bulls move steady to firm. Vealers remain firm. A 1,229 pound load of choice and prime fed steers sold at 37.75, 887-930 pound mixed yearlings at 36.90, 817-888 pound high choice heifers at 25.00 to 35.50, and utility to commercial cows at 22.00 to 27.50.
Sioux City market receipts total about 1000 head with most cattle steady in price and a large portion of western cattle set aside for Monday. Calves number around 200, also predominantly westerns reserved for Monday sale.
Receipts estimate 35,000 for Saturday, 34,000 week ago, 24,000 year ago, with Friday actuals 43,000. Packers at two southern Minnesota plants and 12 Iowa plants plus out-of-state stations. Demand moderate to slow with prices steady to 25 cents lower. Barrows and gilts in weight ranges 160-360 pounds quoted from 19.50 to 21.90 with variations by weight. sows 270-450 pounds quoted 18.25 to 20.35.
Market listings report hogs of various weight ranges with steady bids in Washington. Top value is 21.75 per cwt for 180-190 and 190-240 ranges, declining with heavier or lighter categories. sows and larger hogs fetch lower prices.
Cedar Rapids hog market held steady with added quarter base on delivered weights. Prices show good butchers and packers across weight classes from 180 to 600 pounds, plus U.S. prime steers, yearlings, and cows quoted with yield bases, plus poultry and eggs prices across several categories.

F W Green prominent Decorah farmer died recently leaving an estate valued at $20,000 and a 345 acre farm. Kenneth Green has been appointed administrator of the estate.
The Iowa state board of education approved salary increases for staff at five state educational institutions. Ranges go from 120 to 800 dollars a year with merit boosts. Academic and non academic staff receive patterned raises, with basic increases of 240 dollars for 12 month staff and 200 dollars for nine month staff.
The Rev Olav Monsen resigns as pastor of Bethany Lutheran Church near West Union to accept a call at Zion Lutheran Church in East Stanwood Washington. Mrs Monsen and daughter Evelyn will visit Brooklyn and Chicago in July before the family moves to Washington in August. They came to West Union from Superior Wisconsin in 1948.
SHELLSBURG The Rev Al Fred Ekkens will deliver his final sermon at Shellsburg Presbyterian church on Sunday. He and his family plan to move to Seattle next week where he has accepted a new pastorate. Ordained June 3 he has served as student pastor for two years while completing studies at Dubuque Seminary.
The Independent Board for Presbyterian Foreign Missions, based in Philadelphia, announces Collyn Franzenburg as a missionary to Palestine. A Bible Presbyterian church member from near Walker Iowa, she holds nursing and theological degrees from the University of Iowa and Faith Theological Seminary and attends the Wycliffe Emmer Institute of Linguistics in Norman Oklahoma.

Kathryn Staak 36 was found dead early today at the wheel of her car after it left Highway 92 nine miles west of Oskaloosa. Sheriff says she may have fallen ill or dozed while driving en route to Omaha. body found at 3 40 a m by a Winterset trucker.
Ray Greenlee Jr., 20, was charged with murder after the fatal Friday morning shooting of his trailer roommate Robert Leroy Smith, 20, in Davenport. Police Magistrate Mc Swiggin ordered him held without bond pending a preliminary hearing next Friday morning. Greenlee insists the shooting was accidental, saying the German Luger discharged twice while he tried to take it from Smith, who had asked to examine the pistol and then refused to return it.
Estherville Iowa AP Johnny Schany 26 was killed Friday afternoon in a car motorcycle crash on highway 17 as he tried to pass a farm tractor and trailer. He died instantly and worked as a janitor at Estherville hospital.
Vera Lovejoy of Boston's Back Bay heads Benson's Animal Farm in Hudson New Hampshire a zoo circus museum and amusement park. She was appointed in 1944 while secretary to a Boston businessman whose syndicate owned the Strangest Farm on Earth and cited wartime manpower shortages as the reason.

Richard Schuemaker, 36, a World War II veteran, was seriously injured when his arms were caught in a hay baler on a Marengo area farm late Friday afternoon. He was alone. doctors at Watts hospital said it will take days to determine if any function can be saved and he was listed in fair condition.
Hugh Harrison, longtime managing editor of the Davenport Democrat, will retire after more than 50 years in journalism. A Davenport native, he started with the Davenport Daily Leader in 1900, joined the Democrat in 1902, became city editor in 1905, and served as managing editor since 1931 while active in state Democratic politics.
Milo S. Barnes 81, Rock Island station agent for 32 years, died Friday near Dysart while en route from Long Beach to Dysart. Born near Nashville Iowa in 1869, he came to Dysart in 1905 and retired in 1937. Survived by son Howard of Dysart and daughter Blanche Huddleson of Boone. Funeral Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Dysart Methodist Church with burial in Dysart cemetery.
