The Cedar Rapids area launches a major civil defense exercise at 1 p.m. with a simulated bombing. Linn County and city defense units center actions after the alert, aided by private pilots from 40 eastern Iowa airports delivering supply boxes to a devastated city.
Radio station KCRG will air a first hand account of the defense exercise. News Director Dick Yoakam will broadcast from Hunterfield from 3 to 3 30 p.m.
Cedar Rapids and Linn county defense officials outline an upcoming bombing drill with 300 to 500 planes expected to land at Hunter field and Municipal airport carrying heavy cargo. Cargo will move to Hawkeye Downs and Wilson high school dispersal zones under radio cockpit control with Civil Air Patrol cadets directing air traffic.
Sen Hickenlooper declared wartime atomic officials blocked prosecuting a prominent employee who allegedly passed secret papers to a Russian agent. He cited a photo of the person with a Russian agent and consulate member and said Manhattan District fatefully refrained from charging him.
Washington The Western Union Telegraph Co said it reached a wage settlement with the independent American Communications Association covering 6000 New York area employees. ACA members will gain about 16.5 cents per hour plus boosted messenger pay. The AFL division warns the strike remains planned at 7 a.m. Monday across many facilities.
About 500 Collins Radio employees in Cedar Rapids were praised for meeting an increased ARC-27 production schedule for a line of military aircraft radios. Company president Arthur Collins highlighted the backlog reaching $100 million and May through current deliveries nearing $3 million monthly as wartime demand grows.
Bangkok radio reports the navy led rebellion in Thailand has been crushed. Premier Pibul Songgram is said to have returned to Bangkok and resumed control while rebels and their radio station were dispersed and destroyed.
A four car collision five miles south of Iowa City on highway 18 left one dead and six injured. Victim Joe Walsh of Riverside, 37, drove a car involved. Five injured were taken to University hospitals. two released after treatment. Among the injured are Ethel Greenhalgh and Arthur Greenhalgh of Decatur, Fred Beers, Elmo Hietzman of Riverside, and two soldiers from Camp McCoy, Wisconsin.
The Milwaukee Rapid Transit line halted operations Saturday night, possibly ending its 55 year life. The final run occurred at 10:10 p.m. under orders from Federal Judge Robert E. Tehan and the State Public Service Commission.
United Air Lines DC-6 crashed into Crystal mountain 25 miles west of Fort Collins Colorado, killing 50 aboard including 45 passengers and five crew. The wreck left a 150 foot wide scar through lodge pole pines, with carnations scattered at the scene as investigators sealed the area. Captain Richard J. Appleby, 32, Indianapolis area, was piloting the plane which was off course en route from San Francisco to Chicago with stops. The crash prompted a temporary morgue setup and a Coast-to-Coast investigation order by Civil Aeronautics Board.
Three Iowans and two former residents of the state were listed as passengers on the United Air Lines DC-6 that crashed near Fort Collins Colorado. The report continues on Page 4 Col 5.
A streetcar and bus strike in Washington began with about 3,400 Capital Transit employees walking out over pay, seniority, and pension benefits. The company issued a final offer at midnight proposing a 15 cent hourly raise plus three cents in extra benefits.
The Missouri River swelled five miles wide in spots flooding dozens of towns in Missouri and Kansas and forcing hundreds from homes. Flood dangers spread to Illinois and Iowa as rivers overflowed banks and farmland across central and south central states. In St. Charles Missouri engineers warned of crest near 35.2 feet and $2,000,000 damage. Red Cross shelters opened as crews battled rising waters amid storm onslaught.
The Office of Price Stabilization froze manufacturers prices on many goods at June 30 levels after Truman signed a 31 day stopgap extension curbing price powers. The move affects cotton textiles shoes apparel and several household appliances and machinery. OPS hopes Congress will allow future regulations to take effect.
Excitement runs high as Camp Good Health hosts its first visiting day since June 21. Parents and friends tour the grounds while children anticipate the Fourth of July events. Weigh-ins show most campers gained weight. Mrs. A. M. Anderson donated a dozen dozen eggs and Dr. J. Owning plus assistant offered free work. Fifteen dollars funds a child’s week at camp.
