Col John Stuelke warns motorists about higher penalties starting Thursday as fines for speeding and most moving violations increase by 10 to 100 dollars. The 2010 Iowa Legislature approved the measure to raise about 9.1 million in court receipts plus 1 million for local governments and 441 thousand for the Crime Victim Compensation Fund.
The state raises fines to support public safety operations amid tight budgets. In 2009 Iowa collected $9.3 million in fines, with lawmakers saying higher penalties help avoid layoffs in courts, corrections, and law enforcement. Senator Rob Hogg notes fines still lag behind regional averages.
