Iowa board seeks 111000 for prison guard raises
Iowa Board of Control chairman asked the state executive council for 111394 to raise prison guard pay at Anamosa and Fort Madison. Fort Madison would get 47500 and Anamosa 63894 to attract and keep staff amid competition from local industries. The 11 year strongest quake rattled a wide area from Paso Robles to Ventura with minor injuries and little damage. A chimney fell on a Parkfield house and a police station plaster cracked in San Luis Obispo. Seismologists measured 5.0 for the first quake and 5.3 for the second at 9 09 pm and 9 26 pm.

Bull Flees From Cows To Island Hermitage
In Claremont South Carolina a 2 year old Angus bull ran from his herd last week breaking a four strand barbed wire fence. He swam a mile and a half to a 10 acre island in a slough and has lived there since. Train Hits Truck Killing One Injuring One on Board
The Illinois Central Land o'Corn passenger train collided with a cement truck at a crossing five miles north of Wheaton. Truck driver Thomas Ryan of Downers Grove died. one train passenger was injured. All diesel units and five cars derailed as the Waterloo to Chicago service was interrupted.
