President Eisenhower nominated Arnold R. Jones to join the Tennessee Valley Authority board of directors. Jones, 53, is assistant director of the budget bureau on leave from Kansas State College where he was dean of financial administration and chief financial officer. He succeeds Harry A. Curtis as his nine year term ends May 18. Born in Haddam Kansas, Jones rose from Manhattan accounting work to Kansas State faculty before entering federal service in 1956.
Four Eastern Airlines crew escaped injury when a DC-7B struck a parked Constellation on landing in Miami. The training craft and the Constellation were gutted by fire, with flames spreading to the terminal area as police restrained onlookers. Officials blamed a hydraulic failure for the crash, causing about four million dollars in losses.
U S Ambassador James J. Wadsworth said the U N report on Hungary will force Russia to ease oppression and seek terms with Hungarians. He told refugees that the five nation committee document indicting Russia shows many cannot be fooled by Soviet friendliness and that communism suffered a body blow worldwide.
Wadsworth warned exiles that the U.N. has officially found the Soviets guilty of lying and cruelty and urged mobilizing moral forces against Soviet reprisals in Hungary. He said public opinion by September could shape policy, and that the United States seeks reconvening the General Assembly to discuss the Hungarian report.

Word comes to Cedar Rapids friends of the death in Philadelphia this week of Mrs. Don Van Metre, Coe college graduate and former Cedar Rapids resident. She was the former Jess Marshall and wife of Curtis Circulation Company vice president in Philadelphia. Surviving are her husband and two children, Mrs. Richard Pyle of Baltimore and Tom of Boston. Services and burial were in Philadelphia.
Albertina Lippert Mathis widow of Fred Mathis died in a Cedar Rapids nursing home Friday morning. She left Atkins in 1953 to live with her Cedar Rapids daughters Martha Happel John Raetz and Roy Webber and with Ernest Weber of LaBelle Missouri. Born in Germany March 29 1880 she was a member of St Stephen Lutheran Atkins. Services 2 pm Monday at St Stephen Lutheran Atkins burial in St Stephen Cemetery Keystone funeral home in charge.
Cedar Rapids resident Herman C. Howard aged 44 or 53? died Friday after a long illness. He lived 615 Ninth avenue SE for 35 years and worked 15 years at Union station. Born February 2, 1891 in Paducah Kentucky, he is survived by wife Bertha Garnet and two daughters Marjorie Davis and Barbara Johnson, and son HermanHoward Jr., all of Cedar Rapids. Private service at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Turner chapel with Rev. Frank Ward. Burial at Oak Hill.
Services for Burchard H. Peck of 1233 Ninth Street NW will be held at 3 30 p m Monday in the Barta Hesser chapel with the Rev Samuel Co Ritchhart of the Church of God officiating. Burial is at Cedar Memorial. Friends may call at the chapel. Mrs Late Glass of Fairfield is identified as a sister, not a daughter, of Mr Peck and his wife was Martha Kun.
Funeral services for Mrs Rose M Pres ecott will be held at 1 30 p m Monday in the Barta Hesser chapel with Theodore B Hlubucek officiating. Burial will be in Czech National Cemetery.
Federal Judge John M. Cashin halted further government anti trust action against the Aluminum Company of America ALCOA saying the aluminum industry is now competitive enough to render more restrictive measures unnecessary. The government had sought an extension to 1961 to pursue additional anti trust moves. Cashin rejected that request.
Dr Peter H Wyckoff of the Air Force Cambridge Research Center describes a sunbeam powered satellite using atomic oxygen harvested from the upper atmosphere to drive a rocket engine. A 40 inch test craft could launch within five years, separate from IGY satellite moons planned for 1957 58.
Donald J. Nemec, 51 Twenty first avenue SW, was fined $75 and costs by Municipal Court Judge Loren Hullinger after pleading guilty to reckless driving. The incident on Ellis boulevard NW involved his car ramming a parked vehicle in front of 1109 Ellis, moving it about 15 feet.
Houston AP reports Jack Shutta, 58, veteran actor and vaudeville performer in New York and later Hollywood, died Friday. The entertainer built a career across stage and screen, with credits that included vaudeville circuits and early film work before settling in Houston.
The FBI announced the arrest of five men for stealing six 200 pound army bridge beams, each 15 feet long. Also noted, Jane Russell and Robert Mitchum star in Macao on Channel 9 Theater Sunday at 10:00.
In Linn county district court James Sampson, 17, pleaded guilty to breaking and entering and received a ten year prison term with Phillip Philbrick as judge. He and two other youths were accused of stealing a cash register containing under one dollar from Kadlee Brothers garage on April 2. One youth received a ten year suspended sentence and the third, James Hill, also drew a ten year term at Anamosa Reform School.
County authorities probe a theft of a diamond engagement ring and a wrist watch from a glove compartment of Paul McGiverin’s car parked in the Wendy Oaks restaurant lot. McGiverin, at Twenty first Street NE, says the items valued at 400 to 500 dollars were taken while he, his son, and his son's girlfriend dined Friday evening.
Charges filed against Gerald E. Himebrook allege he passed a worthless check for 35 dollars at Killians on March 12. The check was drawn on the Toledo National Bank of Toledo.
William Rinderknecht was appointed inheritance tax appraiser Saturday by Judge Charles Penningroth. He succeeds Joseph Sadowsky, longtime Humane Society leader, who died June 17.
Tom Kehoe was sentenced to three months in the county jail for furnishing beer to a minor.
A judgment of four thousand dollars plus interest was awarded to F. G. Van Auken against Loren F. Manley in a promissory note suit. The Century Block Company filed suit against Marvin Durks seeking four hundred sixty seven dollars and forty cents for a promissory note.
Eight year old Paul O Shea injured in a two car head on collision near Monticello remains in fair condition at Mercy Hospital. He suffered fractures to leg and arm and severe head injuries. His father Francis O Shea, 13 year old brother Larry and Bertram Mantler 35 of Cedar Rapids were also injured though not seriously. The crash occurred on highway 151 bridge over the Maquoketa river near Monticello after Mantler swerved to avoid vehicles waiting to turn left.
Oliphant Engineering of Toddville will build a five foot sidewalk over the Sixteenth Avenue viaduct for 33337.80 dollars after the Cedar Rapids City Council accepted the low bid from four bidders. The State Highway Commission will supervise design and bidding with construction paid by the city. The walkway serves students attending Thomas Jefferson High School next fall.
Portland mayor Terry Schrunk was cleared of perjury by a state circuit court jury after a two hour deliberation. He still faces charges including bribery and subornation of perjury tied to a year long vice probe. Schrunk claims gamblers orchestrated the accusations to ruin his election prospects. Much testimony echoed Washington rackets committee hearings.
Barry Olsson of Salina Kansas has been elected president of the Augustana Luther League, the church youth organization. The 20 year old Bethany College junior heads a two year officer slate including Kenneth Kuhn Vancouver BC as vice president and Jane Pearson Rock Island Illinois as secretary. The installation will be conducted by Rev Dr Oscar A Benson of Minneapolis with about 4500 delegates from 35 states five Canadian provinces and 13 other nations attending the five day conference in Chicago.
Three Cedar Rapids members of B nas B rith attend the eighty ninth District No 6 Grand Lodge convention in Chicago. Bernard M Goldman Sol Maikon and J D Siegel Cedar Rapids delegates. Election of new officers and review of philanthropic accomplishments are on the agenda. The five day convention started today.
The Rev. Russell R. Lester was installed as pastor of the Federated church of Keota Sunday evening. The installation was conducted by a commission from the Keokuk Presbytery of the United Presbyterian church with pastors from nearby Presbyterian churches taking part in the ceremony.
London auction house Sotheby’s to sell George Bernard Shaw’s unpublished love letters to Alice Lockett a hospital nurse dated 1883 to 1885. The notes reveal a romantic at times tender and blunt voice amid Railway Station waiting rooms and steam engines with Shaw then 27. He later died on November 2 1950 at age 94.
Kendall J. Turner of Atkins paid 41.50 after ignoring 14 parking tickets in Cedar Rapids. Municipal Court Judge Loren Hullinger Jr. fined 36 with the rest covering costs. Turner had faced overtime parking meter violations and a prohibited zone ticket, plus earlier moving violations.
Edith Barlow, 25, once billed as England's shortest woman at 22 inches, died Friday in Newcastle.
