A pet hen scratched at the bedroom door of her 74 year old owner on Thursday night and woke her in time to escape from a burning Berlin house. The fire alarm from the hen saved the woman, and no injuries were reported.
A two car head on collision on the highway 151 Maquoketa river bridge near Monticello injured four people. Paul O Shea 8 suffered fractures and severe head injuries and was rushed to Mercy hospital Cedar Rapids. Larry 13 and Bertram Mandtler 35 sustained cuts and sprains. Mandtler was southbound and lost control while attempting to pass, causing the crash.
Iowa District Judge H. D. Evans ruled Jack Petru of Lone Tree innocent of reckless driving after an appeal of a justice of the peace court fine. The original $100 fine had $75 suspended.
Four Boy Scouts and Scoutmaster Charles Merritt rode 600 miles from Los Angeles to Phoenix in searing heat start June 17, crossing 4900 foot mountains. They carried repair gear and slept under stars, drinking vast water as they endured flat tires and high temperatures, including a 130 degree water temp.

He worked 35 years at Klinger's paint store and last three years for Stan's painters. Surviving are his wife two sons George and Earl three sisters Mabel Machabee Margaret McManes and Mary Bixby. The former Cedar Rapids resident George W. Perkins died in Quincy Illinois early Wednesday. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Bethel AME Church conducted by Reverend Theodore Hudson and Reverend Burt. Burial follows at Linwood. Turner chapel will receive calls until 9 p.m. Friday.

Cedar Rapids man Virgil S Richardson 38 entered an innocent plea Friday to a charge of passing a false 2350 dollar check for a sports car. He allegedly cashed the check at Foreign Cars Inc on June 13 for a MG roadster which the company has recovered.

Dr. Patrick Hedges moved to South Dakota in the 1880s after winning $100,000 in a New York poker game. He used the fortune to buy cattle but the 1886 blizzard wiped out the herd. He returned to dentistry, often treating patients in his "pie wagon" as he rode between ranches. Hedges celebrated his 100th birthday on May 15 and retired in 1931, later staying at the Veterans hospital in Hot Springs.
