A Monday evening rainstorm left the 1000 block of Shaver road NE navigable only to trucks as water four feet deep drenched the area. By morning the water receded. Downtown rain measured 1.96 inches with 2.61 inches at Cedar Rapids Municipal airport, totaling 3.54 inches with Sunday’s rain, about 65 percent of June’s typical total.
Western Electric employees at the North Western Bell Telephone Co. plant in Cedar Rapids held a 4 pm protest march lasting about an hour over ventilation in restrooms transfer of union officials and working hours. Terry Riley president of Local 17290 of the Communications Workers of America said it was not a strike and that the state is studying the complaints.
A majority of Cedar Rapids IRS office workers have formed a local lodge of the American Federation of Government Employees AFL-CIO. National representative Carl W. Holt said the Cedar Rapids unit is the first in Iowa to join the federation, now 250,000 members strong.
