American redstart: a common warbler of Iowa forests
In Iowa forests the American redstart is a widespread spring through summer resident. The bird nests across Canada and the United States with a range tied to water, rests in Jamaica in winter, and sometimes winters in southern Florida. Males are black with orange on the breast and tail, while females are gray and white with yellowish orange sides. The species has distinctive foraging behavior and a sneeze-like call. Brandon Caswell, a Marion resident, pursues birding and nature photography with his family.
