A Monday morning storm in Cedar Rapids killed a $20,000 collectors item plane and prompted damage tallies. An outside probe may review police conduct in two recent civilian clashes. The Cedar Rapids School Board discussed a cost neutral program expansion and students may face junk food restrictions.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are forecast for tonight and Wednesday with cooler, wetter conditions. Lows will be in the lower 70s tonight and Wednesday’s high near 90 as residents are advised to stay prepared for possible thunderstorms.
The May 1978 report shows the U S trade deficit at 2.24 billion, the smallest in eight months as imports fell while exports rose to a record 11.75 billion. For January to May the deficit remains large at 14.77 billion, with exports up 7 percent from 1977 and imports up about 12 percent.
Roger Reed, 18, of Alburnett, was moved to a stretcher after a 25 foot fall while stripping forms under the Interstate 380 bridge. He cut his hand on a nail and lost balance after untethering his safety line. Reed is at St Luke's with two broken feet and listed as fair. Another worker Danny Booker, 18, suffered multiple injuries in a separate fall nearby.
St Luke's Hospital raises rates averaging 8.3 percent with semi private rooms up from 91 to 99 per day and private rooms from 96 to 104. Emergency charges rise to 16 per visit and various fees increase up to 15 percent. Some areas, including the pharmacy and physical therapy, see no change this period.
Dr William J Bach 42 of Brockton Illinois was named the College Community School Districts third superintendent at a special board meeting Monday night. The board unanimously approved a 32000 three year contract with a seven month probationary period. Bach will earn more than his prior 27500 salary at Edgar County district No 2 in Hume NJ while College Community serves about 2860 students.
Francis Jay Crawford a Mobile Alabama businessman was freed from a Soviet prison about 24 hours after two Russians accused of spying were released in a trade agreed by Moscow and Washington. Crawford returned to the Intourist Hotel amid a tense scene as reporters and officials observed the handover.
The Linn County Board of Supervisors advanced plans to relocate county administrative offices to a portion of the Penick and Ford plant at 920 First St. SW. The board approved an option to buy the building and adjacent parking from Univar Corp for 750000, with remodels estimated at 260000, totaling just over 1 million.
