Barley Smut Inquiries at Ames Seed Lab
Special to The Gazette. In Ames the seed laboratory reports many inquiries about loose and covered smut in barley. Loose smut is more prevalent this year and hits Spartan and Velvet varieties hardest. Distinguishing the two smuts matters because covered smut can be controlled with Ceresan, now used in seed treatment centers in Iowa. The head infected with loose smut appears black early, with smut masses enclosed by a whitish membrane, but details fade as the season advances.

Seed treatment methods for smut control described
Porter notes covered smut resembles loose smut early on but hardens in heads and cannot be controlled by Ceresan. Only hot water treatment works, though it is tedious and impractical except for seed destined for plots where seed can be saved. Seed treatment also controls seedling blight organisms like scab and root rot.
