Iowa flood evacuees aided by boats and choppers
Northwest Iowa faced rapid flooding as Rock Valley and Hawarden residents evacuated or sheltered. Gov. Reynolds declared a disaster for 21 counties, including Sioux, enabling state assistance. Water restrictions were issued in Hawarden as power shutoffs and road closures unfolded. Local crews used swift boats, dive teams, and sandbag lines to evacuate, while rivers including James and Big Sioux rose toward flood levels.
