Tornado Toll Rises in Missouri Lead Belt Far West of St Louis
Six people died and more than 30 were injured as tornadoes struck the Missouri lead mining belt southwest of St. Louis. William Betterton, 41, a Southern Illinois University music professor, and his wife died when their camper car was hurled into a rock bluff near Farmington. In Old Mines a twister destroyed nearly a dozen houses. Roy Pratt and his 8 year old son were killed as their frame dwelling collapsed. Two elderly brothers died near Farmington. Hospitals reported about 35 injuries. A second swarm hit central Kansas, causing over 10 million dollars in damage.
