A 57 year old farmer Charles Smith shot and killed his wife Lena Attwood 17 at a farm south of Troy Mills. He later killed himself in the barn after telling four workmen of the murders. A roof fire at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday leveled the home of Earle Brockman deputy county auditor two miles northeast of Marion. Mrs Brockman had been washing when papers were placed in a stove triggering the blaze. Neighbors and Marion firemen fought the fire but only chemicals could curb flames. First floor furniture survived. second floor and most clothing destroyed. The house, rebuilt thirty years ago after a prior fire, suffered about 4000 in loss with half covered by insurance.
Nineteen convicts escaped from the Eastham prison farm near Crockett Texas late Tuesday, according to word received at the Texas penitentiary. Warden W W Ward said details were not known as officers pursued the fugitives.
