France pushes pacts to guard world peace
Premier Leon Blum's government will accelerate negotiations on three regional mutual assistance pacts to safeguard Europe. One pact would apply to western Europe, another to the Danube basin and a third along the Mediterranean. France hints at removing sanctions against Italy and seeks a friendly understanding with Britain and better relations with the United States as defense reinforcements surge along the German frontier. About 30,000 troops were ordered to the north and east borders, bringing line strength to roughly 140,000 men from the Belgian to the Swiss boundary.
