Ely potter Clary Illian champions historic downtown preservation
Illian, a 64 year old Ely Historic Preservation Commission member, helps identify protect and educate about historic sites. The commission logged two blocks of downtown Dows Street on the National Register in 2003 and now focuses on the Ely Community Center building, built in 1923, for National Register nomination. The center houses government offices, a senior dining room and formerly the library, with a history archives project planned. Illian aims to preserve Ely’s small town identity amid new growth and development.
