Miss Jessie Parker says the voluntary program aims to raise public awareness of atomic energy benefits and risks, with a three week pilot for fifth graders at Iowa State Teachers College yielding positive results.
Fifty three Linn county school districts share 34 227 24 in supplemental transportation aid for 1949 50 figures released by State Superintendent Jesse Parker to County Supt Walter Shupp. Payments average 10 88 per eligible transported pupil with Linn districts ranging from 7108 43 in Cedar Rapids to 10 89 in Pleasant Hill Rosedale and Rollins rural independents.
Horace Kelsey a 41 year old inmate alias Douglas Kelly had a six months suspended sentence for wife desertion revoked by Judge Floyd Philbrick after evidence showed he did not support his family. He was jailed in Linn county and had been living near Palo under the name Douglas Kelly.
John W. Furlong aged 30 of New York City pled innocent in district court to a larceny charge. He allegedly took a portable radio and a pair of shoes on June 17 from a roommate at a Cedar Rapids hotel.
Albert S. Johnson 36 of 1302 Ellis Blvd NW pled innocent in justice court to false uttering of a check for 796.26 written March 25 in Walford. bond set at 1000 by Justice Charles Benesh as the check was returned for insufficient funds. Elmer H. Malloy sued John P. Bickel and Frank C. Byers Jr for 114.75 on an alleged account. Two district suits were dismissed on plaintiffs motion Edith Breiholz vs Glen H. Breiholz divorce and Sophie Snyder vs George Kopetsky personal injury.
A dozen pickets greeted Secretary of State Acheson at Harvard Yard as he arrived for the universitys 299th commencement. Led by Rev. Robert M. Muir head of the Massachusetts Action Committee for Peace the demonstrators carried placards opposing the atom bomb and calling for peace and more jobs.
The nation's governors named Democrat Frank J. Lausche of Ohio chairman for the coming year at their non political annual conference closing. His remark on possibly supporting Republican Senator Taft in November stirred political tension.
Harry Hand of 3900 Sherman Street NE died at a Cedar Rapids hospital at 7 40 a m Thursday. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. The body is at Satchett Murdoch funeral home at Center Point.

Services for John E Rinderknecht of 1139 J Avenue NW Cedar Rapids will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. E H Widmann officiating. Burial follows at Linwood Cemetery. The body was moved from Turner chapel to his home where friends may call until 9 30 a m Friday.
Audley John Kemper 63 year resident and retired farmer died Tuesday after a long illness. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 30 p m Saturday in Turner chapel by Rev G H Bamford of Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church with burial at Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.
Word has been received of the death of W N Northcott at Sherman Texas. He was vice president of Austin College there and earlier in the 1930s promoted work at Cornell College. A Cedar Rapids Y M C A connection and brother of the late John B Northcott are noted. He is survived by his wife and a son in Texas.
Joseph Nyere 418 B avenue NW Cedar Rapids died in a Cedar Rapids hospital at 6 25 a m Thursday after a sudden illness Born September 15 1860 in Cedar Rapids he lived several years in Iowa City Surviving are two sisters Mrs Kate Nyere Orrison and Miss Emma Nyere and a brother Louis all of Cedar Rapids He was a member of First Lutheran church He studied biography and history Services will be at Turner chapel at 3 30 p m Saturday by Rev H G Schwegler Burial at Oak Hill cemetery Friends may call at the chapel The family requests no flowers.
In Des Moines the official canvass shows Bourke B. Hickenlooper winning the Republican renomination for U S Senate with 193 337 votes in a three way contest on June 5. Earl F Wisdom Des Moines attorney earned 38 001 votes and Harry B Thompson Muscatine farmer 25 votes.
Cedar Rapids officials debated allowing angle parking on First Avenue to improve traffic flow and assess safety and fairness. Attorney Claassen urged council to push the plan to the state, while opponents warned of setting a precedent and potential special privilege for merchants. Public Improvements chief Tapper cautioned about paving costs and possible state immovables, and the council planned further surveys and a Monday vote.
Knoxville story states a woman entering a burning house to recover a photograph of her ex husband was overcome by smoke and hysteria and carried to safety by firemen. The incident involves Mrs General Bowling and a house fire in Knoxville Tennessee.
Paris report says Lena Horne and MGM musical director Lennie Hayton kept their marriage secret for three years for professional reasons. They announced in Paris they wed three years ago. plan to go to England next week with Horne's daughter Gail. Hayton takes a year off from MGM.
Milwaukee AP report of the 41st triennial Lutheran Church Missouri Synod convention where Dr. John W. Behnken urged renewed unity efforts. Delegates from 873 bodies representing 5,566 parishes in the United States and Canada heard calls to foster conferences among clergy and laity of all Lutherans nationwide.

Parsons College announced on Thursday an additional $10,000 gift from Hubert Howard, chairman of the National Munitions Board. The Fairfield native and Parsons alumnus has now donated more than $135,000 in total gifts to the college, following a $40,000 gift announced earlier this month.
Wilfred Head of Building Trades and Teamsters representative was elected president of the Building Trades Council. He succeeds L. Curtis who did not seek re election. New officers include R. H. Sommers as vice president Bill Schmatt as treasurer John W. Evans as secretary and business agent Edward Jennings as sergeant at arms Joe Hayen and Glen Goodenough join the board of trustees with terms of three and one year respectively.
