Iowa State Warns of Corn Borer and Leaf Blight Threats
Iowa State University entomologist Harold Gunderson reports corn borers in southeastern towns with 10 to 1000 borers per 100 plants. He advises growers to apply insecticides when leaf feeding reaches thresholds, noting DDT legality and alternatives like Bacillus thuringiensis. Armyworms are active statewide. control options include toxaphene, diazinon, malathion, and Dylox. Six counties report southern corn leaf blight, with spraying decisions challenging as fungicides only suppress spore production.
