5 Foot 7 Eeles Stuns Cedar Rapids With Pro Leap

Payton Eeles, a 5-foot-7 infielder from Acworth Georgia, joined the Cedar Rapids Kernels after an unconventional route to pro baseball. He attended Cedarville University by chance through a pastor connection, then played a fifth year at Coastal Carolina where he hit .374 in 63 games. He aims to prove size is not a barrier to reach the affiliated minors.

Iowa defensive end Deonnie Craig blends leadership and playmaking

Deonnie Craig of Iowa balances a public playful side with serious football. The senior defensive end, who attended a four year military school and served as Iowa’s student representative at a Black Student Athlete Summit, started every game last season and logged 10 tackles for losses with 6.5 sacks. Coach Kelvin Bell praises his leadership and pulse of the room as the Hawkeyes enter a talented defensive line year.

Iowa Football Notebook McNamara Showing Progress

Iowa players report Cade McNamara is moving around and more active this summer with good sprint work and throwing. Kaleb Brown and Leshon Williams say McNamara looks healthy and capable, as Kirk Ferentz had hinted he would be back at full speed in June. The QB missed nine games last season with an ACL injury and has limited spring reps, with Penix cited as a model for recovery. Brown and McNamara have little playing time together, having connected only three times before his injury.
