An Ohio historian, Steve Shaffer, was indicted by a Kentucky grand jury for leading the removal of an 8-ton boulder known as Indiana Head Rock from the Ohio River. The felony charge stems from allegedly breaking Kentucky law by removing a protected archaeological object. If convicted, Shaffer faces one to five years in prison. He contends the rock was saved from damage and now rests in a Portsmouth, Ohio garage, amid a dispute over ownership with Kentucky officials.
Shaffer led a crew to pull a carved rock from the Ohio Kentucky border river in September. The artifact features initials names and a crude face possibly a petro glyph. It was registered as a protected archaeological object in 1986 and the case centers on permit requirements rather than the rock’s fate. Shaffer plans to contest the charge.
Dennis Ray Driver, 26, was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of felony murder in the 8 month old Dennis Jr. overdose death. A $10,000 fine was also imposed as investigators said the infant sucked on the father's cocaine tainted fingers after he slept with the baby on his chest.
A U S government report warns droughts will intensify, storms will grow fiercer, and floods will deepen as climate change accelerates. It cites more frequent heavy rainfall in northern states, rising hurricane power since the 1970s, and warns that adaptation can worsen exposure to future extreme events.
