President Bush visits Cedar Rapids and Iowa City for a damage assessment and a briefing on the flood cleanup. Gov. Culver accompanies him as 37 of Iowa counties are declared federal disaster areas in what officials call the worst Iowa natural disaster.
The Gazette reports the Mighty Wurlitzer organ removal from the Paramount Theatre as flood recovery continues. Flood effects include 6000 jobs lost and widespread damage to private and public sports facilities. City urges caution hiring contractors and temp agencies seek cleanup workers.
DNR gave the University of Iowa the go ahead to pump water from the power plant as Iowa City begins its flood cleanup. Director Richard Leopold toured damaged sites with city US and DNR staff to assess scope and plan inspections of compromised water systems and facilities.
