USDA backs push to grow the bio economy across U S agriculture
A U S D A study led by Duke and North Carolina State finds the bio based products sector contributed 369 billion dollars to the 2013 U S economy and employed four million workers. It lists Ford Deere Coca Cola DuPont Patagonia and Novozymes among firms studied and notes about 20 000 bio based products in the BioPreferred database with growth ongoing. The report says bio based materials displace petroleum and could cut 300 million gallons yearly, equivalent to removing 200 000 cars from the road. It urges production credits and a USDA Certified Biobased Product label to expand the bio economy.
